Christopher Plummer Memorial Fund

Establish and endow “Fund”; income of the Fund will be used to support merit-based scholarship awards to students attending the University in accordance with the attached Exhibit A (below). The university will phase in the thirty-three John V. Lombardi Scholars at the rate of approximately eight per year beginning in the Fall of 2002. In the fourth year and thereafter, it is anticipated there will be a minimum of thirty-three Lombardi Scholars at UF. The Donor shall be invited to participate, as a non-voting ex officio member, of the advisory and/or selection committees for The Lombardi Scholarships. Exhibit A: • Provide merit based scholarships to the most highly talented students and provide them with the freedom and opportunity to explore their academic and leadership potential as undergraduates and to enrich their experiences with a range of activities beyond the university. • Awarded to entering freshmen who combine very high academic achievement with demonstrated leadership abilities and extensive extra-curricular activities. The vigorous selection process involves several levels of committee and interviews. The 33 winners of the highly competitive awards in attendance at the University, designated Lombardi Scholars, would be students of extraordinary promise. • Students receiving the scholarship will receive $15,000 annually providing them with full tuition and living expenses for the entire year. They will attend the University during the fall and spring semesters, and participate in a summer enrichment program each year. Qualifying students will represent all areas of study offered at the University including professional course work. • Preference given to FL residents with aim of encouraging highly talented students to stay in Florida for their undergraduate education…targets well-rounded students who are both academically gifted and also recognized for leadership and other accomplishments. • Scholarships for rising seniors eligible for admission to UF. Each year, UF invites Florida high school students to nominate a small number of students based on size of their junior class (and the number of scholarships available). These, along with other outstanding students identified by the Admissions Office, will be forwarded to the selection committee for consideration for designation as Lombardi Scholars. • The University seeks the most outstanding, well rounded students with emphasis on leadership. Although candidates will rank at or near the top of their class academically, their classroom performance will be complimented by contributions and achievements in non-academic areas. • Criteria used to evaluate nominees are: Academic ability, service to the community and extracurricular attainments, capacity to lead and motivate fellow students, evidence of strong moral character.

Support merit scholarships for undergraduates based on academic achievement. These Scholarships shall be renewable for four years each, so long as the recipient continues with meritorious academic performance. It is the Donors' intent to assist as many students as possible with meaningful support, but at the same time the University will take into consideration the level of other support available to the recipients of these awards.

The spendable income from the Fund shall be used to support scholarship awards to students in the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars (MFOS) program, with a preference for students who graduated from a public high school in the Sumter or Duval County School District. If the MFOS Program ceases to exist at the University, then the spendable income shall be used to support scholarship awards to first generation undergraduate students with low family incomes.
