James Patterson Teacher Education Scholarships
Fund
Purpose
Provide eight (8) one-time scholarships for the academic year 2013-2014 only; the amount of $6,000 to first-year undergraduate or graduate students who are pursuing Education major with the intent of pursuing a career as elementary or secondary school teacher with preference given to the English Language Arts and scholarships may only be applied against the cost of tuition and fees. If there are not enough freshmen undergraduate and first-year graduate Scholarship applicants meeting the foregoing criteria for the number of Scholarships to be awarded, the Committee may then consider other full-time students (undergraduate and graduate) who are entering their first year of studies meeting the foregoing criteria. It is the Donor's preference and wish and of material importance (but not a requirement) in the selection of Scholarship award recipients who meet the foregoing criteria that the recipients understand the importance of promoting literacy and have the motivation and intent to instill in their students an enduring and lasting love of reading. If a student to whom a Scholarship has been awarded ceases to meet the eligibility criteria at any point during the 2013-2014 academic year, whether because of change in curricula, major or course of study, voluntary or involuntary withdrawal or dismissal from his/her academic program, or for any other reason, the student will forfeit any remaining undisbursed Scholarship funds and will not be eligible for future Scholarship awards, but he/she will not have to refund any Scholarship funds that have already been applied against his/her tuition and fees. In addition, the Recipient will also forfeit any remaining undisbursed Scholarship frm.ds allocated to that student and will remit such funds back to the Donor. Each student to whom a Scholarship has been awarded is expected to submit, before the end of the academic year, a written report of approximately 3-4 pages describing the ways in which he/she can apply in his/her future teaching career what he/she has learned in the classroom.

This fund was established by New York Times best-selling author James Patterson who has a passion for books and reading. He believes one way to champion books and reading is by supporting future teachers. Through his foundation, the Patterson Family Foundation, James Patterson is providing scholarships to incoming eligible elementary education students for four years. The scholarship recipients will be obligated to submit a written essay by the end of the academic year in which they describe how they plan to apply what they have learned in their teacher education program within their future classroom
